Today marks International Women’s Day - a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It also aims to advance gender parity.
Social and political activist Gloria Steinem said: "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights."
The influential day has been celebrated for more than a century after it was honoured for the first time on March 19 in 1911. At that time, more than one million women and men attended International Women's Day rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. The date was later changed to March 8 in 1913 and it has remained the global date for International Women's Day since.
The theme of this year’s campaign is 'Be Bold for Change’ and organisers are calling on the masses to help forge a better working world by it being a more gender inclusive place.
