How to decorate your Christmas tree

With 1 December just around the corner, it's almost time to decorate our Christmas trees! And that means giving lots of thought to tinsel, baubles and glitter.

Decorating the house is a fun family activity that everyone can get hands-on with - but it's also nice to have a plan to make sure your house looks more like Santa's grotto and less like a tinsel explosion (unless that's your style, of course…)

The easiest way to make sure everything works well together when decorating the house is to choose a colour scheme for your decorations. This should go nicely with your all-year-round colour scheme and furniture - but that doesn't mean you have to choose the same colour as your sofa for all your decorations!

Here are three great colour schemes to consider this Christmas…

Red and white

Traditional and timeless, red and white is a classic and brilliant colour scheme for almost all homes. Think candy canes, robin ornaments, tartan baubles and Santa hats - your house will transform into Santa's grotto before your very eyes!

It's easy to tie this theme into other aspects of your Christmas festivities too, like your wrapping paper, cushions and throws, and any other Christmas decorations around the house.

Copper and gold

Fancy something a bit more sophisticated? Decadent gold and copper tones are luxurious and an easy option when it comes to filling your home with sparkle and glitz this Christmas.

Partner metallic and glittery baubles with ornate fairy lights for a Christmas tree that will twinkle all through December into the new year. Tie it into the rest of your home décor with gold ribbons on your presents and gold candlesticks and a sprinkle of gold glitter and gold crackers down the centre of your dinner table.

White and chrome

If you're worried about bright golds and reds clashing your with all-year-round home interior, maybe silver and chrome hues are a good option for you. Mimic the festive snow outside with cold, frosty tones and pearlescent ornaments.

Perhaps the easiest of all three trends to extend throughout the home, opt for silver, silver, silver! Sequins also go really well with this colour scheme, and we're loving sparkly ornaments this Christmas to give that tree a little bit more wow-factor. Sparkly reindeers, swans, and snowflakes are all glam and gorgeous - load that tree up!
