Food and wine pairings you need for the best Christmas ever

Eat, drink and be merry, they say - and what better way to do this than by sourcing the best wines to complement every step of your Christmas menu?

Here's your simple step-by-step guide to the ultimate indulgent Christmas day feast, with fabulous wines and flavoursome food.

Christmas canapés

If you're going all-out with your hosting and planning some pre-dinner nibbles for your guests, these Extra Special Prawn and Crab Filo Tarts* (pictured below) are even tastier when served with a cold glass of bubbly. Whatever your taste and budget, our fantastic range means there are plenty of tipples for you to choose from. Or you could try dishing up our Extra Special Handmade Mexican Selection, which includes bite-sized spicy street food like pulled BBQ chicken tortillas, chicken tortas and chilli bean tacos with a cold glass of easy-drinking light-bodied Italian Extra Special Gavi.

For starters

For a luxury twist on the traditional starter, try our Extra Special Hot Smoked Salmon with Mustard & Dill Wreaths. As well as tasting delicious, with its layers of mustard and creamy dill mousse, it makes a pretty impressive centrepiece to kick off the celebration too. Serve with Chablis - perfect with seafood and soft cheeses - as its delightfully rich, medium-bodied taste has a pleasant fruit finish.

The main event

If you're sticking with traditional turkey (or chicken, or a Quorn alternative for vegetarians), then you can choose either a white or red wine. We suggest this crisp and refreshing Sancerre which has layers of lemon and gooseberry and has been harvested on a 500-year-old family-owned estate.

If you've plumped for a red meat, such as our Extra Special Lamb Triple Crown or our Extra Special Rump Heart Mushroom Duxelle with Truffle, try a full-bodied wine instead. This complex, rich and dark Fresh berry-flavour red - Montagne Saint Emilion - partners perfectly with roast beef.

Or this Las Palmas Trapiche Malbec, with hints of blackberries and fig, works excellently well with heavier roasts such as lamb.

After dinner delights

Don't forget about dessert when you're matching your wines! Your traditional Christmas pudding, or mince pies will pair perfectly with a full-bodied red like this beautifully dry Amarone Della Valpolicella (pictured below). Or if you've got a craving for something savoury, why not try our Extra Special Cheese Board which comes with a creamy Lancashire, Red Leicester, Burland Bloom, Farmhouse Creamy Blue and Cheddar. Enjoy with a glass of rich and spicy red, such as our Negroamaro.
