Which wine to have with each course for an Extra Special Christmas meal

Eat, drink and be merry, they say - and what better way to do this than by sourcing the best wines to complement every step of your Christmas menu?

In this, the third instalment of Asda's festive wine guide, it's all about discovering exciting new wines to bring out the best in the delicious range of Extra Special products, created with your Christmas celebrations in mind.

Here's your simple step-by-step guide to the ultimate indulgent Christmas day feast, with fabulous wines and flavoursome food.

Christmas canapés

If you're going all-out with your hosting and planning some pre-dinner nibbles for your guests, these Extra Special Seafood Shots, for example, are even tastier when served with a glass of Extra Special Prosecco, a fresh and fruity fizz with citrus and green apple aromas.

For starters

For a luxury twist on the traditional starter, try the Extra Special King Prawn Salmon & Avocado Terrine. As well as tasting delicious, it makes a pretty impressive centrepiece to kick off the celebration.

Serve it with Marsanne - perfect with seafood, salad and soft cheeses, this is a delightful floral white wine from a far-flung corner of Mediterranean France, bursting with dry fruit and zesty flavours.

As a veggie alternative, the rich Extra Special Wyke Farms Cheddar & Caramelised Onion Souffle can be matched with a crisp glass of Feteasca Regala - there's a modern vibe to this Romanian white grape with lots of soft, tropical fruit flavours.

The main event

If you're sticking with traditional turkey (or chicken, or a Quorn alternative for vegetarians), then you can choose either a white or red wine. We suggest this crisp and refreshing Extra Special Chablis - sourced from a selection of top villages in the Chablis area, this deliciously flinty classic wine is a good all-rounder.

If you've gone for a red meat, such as Extra Special Welsh Rack of Lamb or Extra Special 28 Day Matured Beef Top Rump Joint, try a full-bodied wine instead. This well-rounded and tasty Cigales with its big fruity flavours and creamy sweet tannins, works well, or you could opt for this well-balanced Chilean Carmenere, a slightly spicy and gorgeous red.

And if you've treated yourself to the Extra Special Pork Loin Joint with Black Pudding & Apple Stuffing, pair it with the Extra Special Viognier, a delightfully floral and fragrant white from the Languedoc region of Southern France.

After dinner delights

Don't forget about dessert when you're matching your wines!

If you've got a sweet tooth, why not replace your traditional Christmas pud with this showstopper Extra Special Hand Finished Raspberry & White Chocolate Pavlova Wreath

Savour it with a glass of Extra Special Asti to really round off the meal in style.

Alternatively, if your tastes are more savoury, we've got an entire guide on which wines to pair with your cheeseboard - cheese lovers should definitely check it out ahead of the big day.
