Anne Hathaway’s empowering post-baby body speech is simply great

Anne Hathaway has shared an inspiring speech on Instagram, urging women everywhere to stay strong against the body image pressures which can often follow having a baby.

“There is no shame in gaining weight during pregnancy (or ever).”

The Les Miserables and Devil Wears Prada actress welcomed her first child with husband Adam Shulman in March this year, and has since sought to help support and empower other women who may be struggling with the many changes that come with pregnancy.

During an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May, Anne revealed that she chose not to work with a personal trainer at her local gym because he had body shamed her about ‘baby weight’. Now, she’s taken to Instagram to share a powerful message about loving your body, no matter what.

Below a photograph of some DIY denim shorts cut from an old pair of jeans, Anne wrote:

“There is no shame in gaining weight during pregnancy (or ever). There is no shame if it takes longer than you think it will to lose the weight (if you want to lose it at all). There is no shame in finally breaking down and making your own jean shorts because last summer's are just too dang short for this summer's thighs.

“Bodies change. Bodies grow. Bodies shrink. It's all love (don't let anyone tell you otherwise). Peace xx #noshame #lovewhatyouhavebeengiven.”

Anne isn’t the only celebrity to speak out against the pressures that are heaped on new mums. Blake Lively, who is currently pregnant with her second child, has also spoken out recently about the way in which many people celebrate the idea that women should try to 'snap back’, following the birth of a child.

Though the A-lister has been applauded for getting into impressively athletic shape for her most recent film The Shallows, which was filmed just eight months after the birth of her daughter James, Blake has spoken out about the unfair pressures new mothers face.

Of the praise she received about her trim figure, the actress said: “It’s so unfair. It’s so celebrated: ‘This is what someone looks like after having a baby.’ And I think a woman’s body after having a baby is pretty amazing.”

“You’ve just done the most incredible miracle that life has to offer,” she added. “You gave birth to a human being. I would really like to see that celebrated.”
