Embrace your post-baby body like Giovanna Fletcher

It's time for the mums of the world to unite! Does this sound familar - you just had a baby, yet someone thinks it's helpful to suggest that you try this miracle cream or do that exercise to help you shift your baby weight?

Giovanna Fletcher feels your pain. Early this week, the author and mum of two revealed on Instagram that she was body-shamed by another woman a mere 11 DAYS after giving birth to her second child, Buzz. In the post, which you can see for yourself below, Giovanna says that a 'near stranger' pointed and laughed at her stomach, saying 'Mummys still got her baby tummy'.

While Giovanna was obviously shocked, she laughed about the incident at the time and later took to social media to turn what happened into something positive for new mothers everywhere. As Giovanna says, she’s proud of her 'miracle worker' bump: 'Yes, I still have a bump. But that bump kept my little baby boy safe for a whole nine months. That bump has filled my world with even more love and light than I knew possible.'

A few days ago I had a near stranger point at my stomach, laugh and say 'Oh look, Mummy's still got her tummy'. This was eleven days after giving birth. I was so shocked I laughed. But the words have stuck with me. Obviously. It wasn't left there either as there was another comment about my face 'slimming down'. More than anything, I was baffled over the stranger's need to share her thoughts... Yes, I still have a bump. But that bump kept my little baby boy safe for a whole nine months. That bump has filled my world with even more love and light than I knew possible. That bump is a miracle worker... My bump will slowly go over time, but I'll never stop being thankful to it and my body for everything it's given me. #spreadlove ❤️ xx

Another mum who's making headlines this week for her body positive attitude is Australian mum Haddas Ancliffe. Since she gave birth to her baby boy Jonah in 2014, Ancliffe has been sharing images of her stomach in the hopes that other mothers will get the confidence to embrace their stretch marks and saggy tummies.

As she says in the first image she shared, approximately a year after giving birth: “There's so much pressure in our society for mothers to 'get their bodies back' and you feel a constant shame if you're not working out to do that, but I can honestly say I am not ever going to try to get my body back. I will workout to be stronger but not to change how I look. My body did the most incredible thing a human body could do and it should only ever be loved and appreciated for it. I am beautiful, screw what mainstream society says, I'm sexy too!” Hear hear, Haddas!

So, mums: celebrate your bodies for the wonderful gift of life they've given. Our bodies are beautiful, and the scars and strechmarks only prove what magical things they've done, so remember to show your tummy some love!
