Being a new parent is hard work! You can read all the baby books in the world and chat to hundreds of other parents, but the truth is that nothing will truly fully prepare you for what it’s like to care for a baby. Which means that as a new parent, you’re going to make mistakes.
Making mistakes doesn’t make you a bad parent - you’ve never done this before, remember?
Making mistakes doesn’t make you a bad parent - you’ve never done this before, remember? But by knowing these 10 common mistakes that new parents typically make, you can at least goof-proof yourself just a little.
From forgetting to bring a change of clothing to buying WAY too many newborn diapers, the good news is that when you've made these silly mistakes once, you won't make them again! And if you make some of them anyway then don’t fret - your little darling won’t remember any of them (hopefully)!
1. Buying too many newborn items
Diapers, onesies, socks - you can never have enough, right? Erm, not quite. Babies grow at incredible speeds so all those newborn items are probably going to be too small for your little one in no time. You don't want to run out of anything, but you don't want to get stuck with 100 too-small diapers either!
2. Ignoring the 'splash zone'
You’re changing your baby’s diaper and suddenly there’s a stream of wee hitting your face. And yes, this can also happen with baby girls. Best to put a wipe over the area until you're done!
3. Not accepting help
Letting others help you isn’t a sign of weakness! Remember that you can’t do everything by yourself. And don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it - you’re a parent, not super human.
4. Poke your baby while she's sleeping to make sure that she’s still breathing
Oh phew, she IS breathing. And now she’s awake. And screaming her head off. Oops.
5. Comparing your baby
Whether it’s your best friend or someone you meet at the park, comparing your little one to another baby will just drive you crazy. Every child develops and grows at a different speed and in different ways. And remember if there’s anything that you’re concerned about, you should see your doctor.
6. Clipping your baby’s finger when trying to cut their nails
Don’t worry, it happens. And no, it doesn’t mean that you’re the worst parent in the world! Here’s a handy tip - cut your little one’s nails while they’re sleeping to minimise wriggling. Find more clever baby hacks here.
7. Throwing your baby up in the air after feeding
Lots of babies love going up high in the air. This is best avoided after a feeding though - for reasons that will seem incredibly obvious only after the fact!
8. Giving your baby your smartphone for them to play with
Your little one can’t even find their own nose but somehow managed to delete all of your apps AND text your boss. Great.
9. Forgetting the spare clothing
For the baby and for you!
10. Leaving a drink within arm's reach
It WILL end up spilling all over the floor. Same goes for any food.
