The first trailer for Game of Thrones Season 7 is here and it’s all about the Starks

Season 7 of Game of Thrones might still be six months away from our tellies - it's set to return to screens in summer 2017 - but HBO is already ramping up the excitement with the first trailer for the new season airing on US TV this week.

The short trailer appeared in the ad break during the finale of Westworld, as part of a wider promotion of what shows HBO has in store for 2017 and fans quickly started sharing screengrabs on social media.

The teaser was only a couple of seconds long, but it looks like Season 7 is going to be all about the House of Stark.

We start with a shot of Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) who appears to be in the godswood in Winterfell. She's certainly dressed for the North, but who is she so surprised to see?

Then it cuts to Jon Snow on the ramparts of Winterfell. He's talking with a woman with red hair, who has her back to camera - this is most likely Sansa. Are they planning to rule Winterfell together?

But the last still from the trailer - which hasn't yet appeared online so we only have the still images to go on - is definitely the most thrilling for Game of Thrones fans.

It shows Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) on horseback and she too is dressed for a cold winter. In the shot, she appears to be gazing over the horizon at a view she hasn't seen in a very long time - is it Winterfell?

It certainly looks like the Starks are regrouping.

Of course, since Season 6, the TV series has been in unchartered territory.

With George R.R. Martin still working on the sixth book in the series, The Winds of Winter, the TV show is now ahead of the books, which means there's no way of reading ahead to see what might happen.

All we know is - Winter is almost here.

Game of Thrones season 7 - believed to be made up of 7 episodes - is set to air on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK in summer 2017.

In the meantime, you can re-watch all the drama from series 6 at home with the new DVD release, available online at or in-store.
