You thought it was all over with Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. Then they confirmed three new Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them spin-offs and the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play. And now, it seems like the boy, or rather man, wizard himself might be destined to return to the big screen once again in a film version of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Sources have confirmed that the rights for the movie have already been snapped up by J.K. Rowling and Warner Bros Entertainment themselves (the guys who brought us all the previous Potter films). Eek!
Before we all freak out about the potential new film, let's rewind a bit. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child the play opened in London's West End recently to rave reviews, and has almost completely sold out. Taking off where the last film/book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows left off, it sees a grown-up Harry Potter and his son Albus several years in the future. The only further thing that has been announced is that the play script will be released as a book for the public to buy, due to come out on July 31st – Harry Potter’s birthday. Of course, as soon as the play was announced speculation was rife about whether it might be turned into a film at a later stage. In fact, Rowling has even come out herself to deny it:
However, an Irish lawyer and blogger called Brian Conroy wasn't exactly satisfied with that response. So much so, that he recently did some digging around newly registered trademark licenses, and found out something magical: that a whole bunch of new trademarks relating to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: The MOVIE had already been filed by both Warner Bros. Entertainment and Ms. Rowling herself.
But what does this mean?! While it could be possible that they are just covering their backs to make sure that no random person files the trademarks, the really exciting thing is that this could mean that both Warner Bros and JK might be considering turning Harry Potter and the Cursed Child into a blockbuster at some point in the future. And it definitely confirms that there is a distinct possibility that we will see the return of Harry, Hermione and Ron to a screen near us sooner rather than later!
Now isn’t that exciting?
