How to have a camping holiday at home

When it comes to having fun as a family, we're very much of the opinion that you don't actually have to venture too far from home.

In fact, you may not need to go further than your own garden (or even your own living room) for a few days of fun-packed quality time with your loved ones.

From games and camps to decor and snacks (yes, snacks!), we've listed our top tips on how to make new traditions become great vacation memories - even when that vacation is a staycation.

Create your base camp

If you're lucky enough to have a garden, you're already halfway to creating your perfect camping holiday. Dig out any camping gear – that festival tent will come in handy here! If you don't already have a tent, you can easily track one down in-store or online, or even create a makeshift tipi with an old sheet and whatever long poles or sticks you can find.

Even if you don't have a garden, balcony or patio, you can still create that camping holiday vibe indoors (which, given our notoriously unpredictable climate, isn't such a bad idea!). Throw down a rug and use pillows, cushions, duvets or blankets to create the perfect cosy den to huddle up in.

Provide entertainment

Whether you're a fan of old-school board games and puzzles, or video games and karaoke, lay on some entertainment.

For outdoor campers, a guitar or ukelele is ideal for fireside singalongs. You could play Twister, Scrabble, dominoes or Monopoly – the best thing about holidaying at home is that you can pop indoors for supplies as and when needed!

Get decorating

We're talking about making the most of it, after all, so don't shy away from the decorations when it comes to creating your outdoor campsite or indoor den! Bunting, fairylights and tealights will all go a long way to making your space more festive – and if you're out in the garden, solar-powered lights are ideal.

Don't forget the snacks

Now for the most important part of your staycation… the food! From grilled bananas, American-style s'mores and hot chocolate to baked potatoes and cups of hot chilli, there are so many tasty treats that are just perfect for camping trips.

Here are some of our favourites…

chicken skewers

Cooked in on a hot grill or on a barbecue, these delicious chicken skewers are flavoured with pine nuts, Parmesan and sun-blushed tomatoes for a moreish flavour everyone will love. Top tip: soak your wooden kebab skewers in water for 20 mins before using so they won't burn.

Grilled fruit kebabs

Another super-easy dessert idea, these grilled fruit kebabs take mere moments to prepare. Drizzle over a zesty lime 'dressing' to serve…

Toasted ciabatta tricolore

Filled with melted mozzarella, juicy tomato and fresh spinach and basil, this substantial sarnie will be a hit – especially after a night of camping in the garden!

Watermelon ice lollies

Scorching afternoons (well, frankly, any afternoon) call for cooling ice lollies – and they don't come prettier than these watermelon popsicles.
