It’s official; there’s a live-action remake of The Lion King in the works, and we couldn’t be more excited!
Following in the footsteps of Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, The BFG, the highly anticipated Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson (slated for March 2017) and the Mary Poppins remake (featuring Emily Blunt as the famous nanny), The Lion King is the latest Disney favourite to receive a modern makeover.
The remake will see this year’s The Jungle Book’s director Jon Favreau work his magic on the Disney classic. He shared the exciting news on Twitter yesterday:
Excited for my next project — Jon Favreau (@Jon_Favreau) 28 September 2016
The famous tale of lions and the great plains of Africa is inspired in part by Shakespeare’s Hamlet - changing the Denmark setting for the African savannah.
The original Disney classic was released in 1994, and has since become known as one of the biggest animated films of all time. Adored by millions of people all over the world, The Lion King has stood the test of time over the years – winning Academy Awards and Grammy Awards (the soundtrack sold over 14 million copies), as well as six Tony Awards for the highly successful stage production which is still one of Broadway's biggest hits today. Translated into eight different languages, its 23 global productions have been seen by more than 85 million people across the world. The Lion King's worldwide gross profit exceeds that of any film, Broadway show or other entertainment title in box office history. Not bad going!
And the much-loved animation is certainly not fading into the background any time soon; Jon Favreau is about to give it a fresh, 21st century live-action update. That means more realistic, more dramatic, more intense – similar to what he achieved for The Jungle Book remake.
But don’t worry, it’s not all new – Disney has reassured fans that Elton John’s iconic Lion King songs Can You Feel the Love Tonight and Hakuna Matata will definitely be featuring once more.
The official announcement from Walt Disney reads: "We can officially confirm that The Walt Disney Studios and director Jon Favreau are putting a new reimagining of The Lion King on the fast track to production.
The Lion King builds on Disney's success of reimagining its classics for a contemporary audience with films like Maleficent, Cinderella, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast."
It continues: "The film will be directed by Jon Favreau, the man behind the live-action Jungle Book and its sequel, which is currently in development. But based on the success of his first foray into the age of live-action Disney, there is nothing to worry about."
Also in Disney’s pipeline is Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton, Sword In The Stone, written by the Game of Thrones scriptwriter, Origin story for The Genie from Aladdin, and Cruella De Vil’s origin story starring Emma Stone. Now we can add The Lion King to the list!
We’re sure the hugely popular animated classic will become another family favourite.
