Watch the epic new trailer for Disney’s Moana

Get excited folks, the first full-length trailer for Disney’s new animated film Moana is finally here!

A ‘badass’ teenage heroine with the power to save the world? We can’t wait for this film to hit the cinema on 2 December!

Just released in all its sunshiny glory, the epic trailer spills a whole load of details about the plot of the adventure film, along with some serious humour too.

Setting the scene, a narrator tells us how a peaceful Polynesian island is about to come under threat from prophesied evil - cue the fury of the lava monster - unless a hero travels across the vast ocean to find a demigod named Maui.

Enter Moana.

A teenager (voiced by newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) living on the island, she bravely sets sail with only her pet chicken in tow, on a mission to save both her home and her people.

In what looks like a truly epic ride, fearless Moana finds the wisecracking ‘Maui, shapeshifter, demigod of the wind and sea, hero of men’ (voiced by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson), before embarking on a treacherous voyage to save the day.

Following in the footsteps of Brave, Zootopia and Frozen, Moana is the latest Disney animation to shun traditional princess characters for stronger, more empowered female leads. There’s also no Prince Charming, either.

“We saw this as a hero’s journey, a coming-of-age story, in a different tradition than the princess stories,” directors Ron Clements and John Musker have explained. “I don’t know that any of the other princesses we’ve been involved with we’d describe as badass!”

The pair also told Time about why they chose to break the Disney mould and shun a fairytale about love and romance. “We thought it would be very appealing to do a female empowerment story that didn’t centre on any sort of romance.

“We saw it as sort of a True Grit-type story: the determined girl who teams up with a washed-up guy. They have this adventure and she finds her true calling—and saves the world in the process.”
