8 new TV shows to look forward to in 2017

There's nothing like curling up for a night on the sofa with a gripping new TV show to keep you entertained. Luckily, next year's television schedule is chock full of dark dramas and thrilling series that will have you hooked from the first episode.

Take a sneak peek at some of the most exciting programmes coming to the small screen below. From a gritty Victorian era drama to a new Marvel mutant series, these are the new TV shows you'll want to add to your watchlist next year.

A Series Of Unfortunate Events

Based on the Lemony Snicket children’s books, A Series Of Unfortunate Events follows the adventures of the very unlucky but extremely clever Baudelaire orphans and the wicked master of disguise, Count Olaf. Starring an A-list cast including Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton and Joan Cusack, this eight-part mini series is apparently very faithful to the beloved books - including some of its darker plot twists.

It’s time to welcome back (with open arms) another one of our favourite TV shows which is all about stealing an election. Scandal is set to return to the small screens for its sixth season after a long break. And a little birdie told us that Olivia Pope is running Mellie's campaign for presidency against Frankie Vargas in the general election. Who will win? All shall be revealed.

Dr Foster

One of the most talked about dramas of last year, which had us all on the edge of our seats, is making a comeback - and it's going to be set two years on from the nail-biting series one finale. Doctor Foster series 2 will be returning to our screens (hooray!), telling the next chapter in the life of a scorned woman and GP Gemma Foster. Last year we had our heart in mouths as we watched Gemma discover that her property developer husband Simon was having an affair with their friend's daughter. And then there was that all important dinner party where everything was revealed. Who knows what's going to happen in series 2!

Early 2017, BBC One

ITV's 'whodunnit' drama has kept the hearts of TV buffs on the edge of their seats for two years now, and the third season is set to be just as gritty as before! The new series will deliver a brand new case for detectives Miller and Hardy who will once again team up, this time to investigate a serious sexual assault.

Early 2017, ITV

Looks like 2017 is the year of dark dramas; Riverdale is an eerie take on the popular American Archie comics, where we follow the lives of the teenage characters living in a beautifully quaint small town, but things are not always what they seem...

January 27, Netflix

Several months after she thwarted a terrorist attack in Berlin, Carrie Mathison is living in New York. And we'll get to find out what happens to Peter Quinn!

February 2017, Channel 4

Game of Thrones

Season 7 is set to be the penultimate season and according to the trailer, it looks like it’s going to be all about the House of Stark. The trailer showed us a shot of Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) who appears to be in the godswood in Winterfell. She's certainly dressed for the North, but who is she so surprised to see? If you've missed the first six seasons make sure you head to Asda to pick up the complete boxset

Summer 2017, Sky Atlantic

Big Little Lies

Based on the book of the same name by Liane Moriarty, we can't wait to watch this powerful series featuring dramatic storylines and a star-studded cast. Who's in it you ask? Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Alexander Skarsgard, Adam Scott, Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley to name a few. Expect a gripping tale of marriage, motherhood and murder.
