If you're constantly trying to convince your friends that cross stitching is cool, we think we might have found just the thing to get them on your side because a new trend has popped up on social media for thoroughly modern crafting. While Yoda, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Simpsons might not be the first things that come to mind when you start planning your latest cross stitch pattern, that's what these innovative crafters have started to use as the subjects for their latest designs.
The trend is led by an American duo, Olivia Montoya and Kerianne Halpin who use their favourite TV shows, music and friends as inspiration for their fun cross stitch patterns. As Olivia told Mashable: “I mostly stitch things that I would want hanging in my bedroom.
“I love classic cartoon characters, but I'm also a huge fan of current hip hop/R&B music. Mixing the things I'm passionate with with the traditional style of embroidery work is my favorite thing about creating my pieces.”
Unfortunately, the girls' work is only available to buy in the US, but we've already been inspired by their quirky designs – and it looks like plenty of other cross stitchers have too. Check out these pieces and be inspired for your next big craft project.
