Prince George has yet again stolen the show with his contributions to 90th birthday celebrations for 'Gan-Gan' (that's the Queen to you and me) in a new collection of royal stamps, announced today with this family photo.
The Royal Mail has officially created 10 new stamps ahead of tomorrow's historic day. Celebrating the first monarch to reach 90, the new set includes the first stamp to feature an almost three year old Prince George and another to feature his namesake, the Queen's father George VI.
But it's this particular photo of the four generations that has the public talking – not only because it features monarchs whose reign will stretch over two millennia, three centuries and 177 years (yikes!) but because of how adorable cheeky Prince George is! The photograph, taken in the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace last summer, features a smiling cherub cheeked George balancing on a pile of foam blocks (cut from an old gym mat) while holding the Duke of Cambridge's hand for support.
Wearing the same shirt and navy corduroys he wore for his first official photograph with Princess Charlotte last year, Prince George looks like he is having the time of his life! According to royal aides, he was 'as good as gold' during the shoot and, as the portrait photographer Ranald Mackechnie told The Express, he loved every minute of it: "The joy and energy coming out of George was fantastic. It lifted the whole shot and lifted the afternoon. He was on top form. He was quite fascinated by the lights. He took it all in his stride."
Of course, the rest of the family are looking great too. All dressed in various shades of blue (we all know how the Queen loves her tonal dressing!), the portrait is certainly striking. Of course the Queen is a dab hand at this now, having appeared on more stamps than anyone else in history – over 200 billion stamps in more than six decades, to be precise!
Never one to take a day off, the Queen has marked both the launch of the stamps and the 500th anniversary of the postal service by visiting the Royal Mail Windsor delivery office on William St, Windsor, today to the delight of the public and staff alike.
