Turning beer into water: Asda supports craft beer company donating all its profits to clean water charities

Brewgooder, a craft beer label that donates 100% of its profits to clean water charities in the developing world, is celebrating after securing a deal to have its Clean Water Lager stocked in over 200 Asda stores across the UK.

The Edinburgh-based social enterprise, co-founded by Alan Mahon and Josh Littlejohn in early 2016, secured the national deal after taking part in Asda’s Social Enterprise Supplier Academy, a scheme which launched earlier this year in partnership with Social Investment Scotland (SIS).

The Academy is funded by the proceeds from Asda’s carrier bag charge in Scotland.

By taking part in the scheme, Brewgooder received access to mentoring provided by Asda’s senior team, as well as a £100,000 loan from the Asda Community Capital fund to support business growth, job creation and to accelerate their clean water idea.

And, just six months after attending the four-day workshop, Brewgooder now have their Clean Water Lager (4.5%) on the shelves of 229 Asda stores across the UK.

Which means Asda customers can enjoy a great tasting craft beer - created with the help of craft beer masters BrewDog based in Ellon, Scotland - while knowing that all the profits from their purchase are being invested in clean water schemes in the developing world.

'When we applied to attend the Asda Social Enterprise Development Academy, we could never have envisaged that just six months later we’d have our products on shelf,' admitted co-founder Alan Mahon. 'The support from the team at Asda, from senior management to the buyers, has been transformational for Brewgooder.'

He added: 'As one of the leading supermarkets, it’s a large route to market and a fantastic platform to get our message and our beers out to customers. With the volume of scale involved, it will accelerate our impact and the number of clean water projects we can support.'

We'll cheers to that!
