On November 10 2016 Asda was named as Quality Food Retailer of the Year at the UK Quality Food Awards.
Quality Food Retailer of the Year was introduced in 2013. This special accolade acknowledges and highlights a particular retailer’s exceptional performance and an outstanding level of entries in that year, with a unique trophy being awarded in recognition of this fact.
The award is judged by industry experts including top chefs, food writers and restaurateurs, and all British supermarkets fiercely compete for this coveted title.
Andrew Moore, Chief Merchandising Officer at Asda said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to have won Retailer of the Year at the Q Awards. It’s a reflection of Asda’s hard work and commitment to put high quality products on shelves for our customers, all at our famously low prices. We’ve invested to make our products even better this year and seeing this recognised through 12 awards, as well as a number of other highly commended lines is a great achievement, and one that we will continue to build on.”
What the judges had to say...
Judging The Quality Food Awards is a rigorous process. There is a 200-strong panel made up of experts in the food and drink industry.
Judges debate and discuss the merits of each product using the following criteria: taste, flavour, texture, aroma, ingredients list, innovation, packaging, presentation and price point.
The judges said they were "hugely impressed with Asda’s creative and clear focus on innovation and their high quality entries across all of the product categories" and that Asda was a "unanimous winner".
They said, "The supermarket delivered exceptional performance not only in relation to category wins; but also achieving equally strong results in the shortlist."

Not only did Asda pick up the big award of the evening, they also racked up 12 other winners including the Gold Q for Value for its Smart Price Toffee. A further 74 products were highly commended by the judges.
It was the meats, however, where the supermarket really shone, picking up awards in the lamb and pork categories for their Extra Special Lamb Guard of Honour with Redcurrant and Mint and its Extra Special Golden Apron Outdoor Bred Pork Loin Joint with Yorkshire Black Pudding, Caramelised Bramley Apple and Lovage Stuffing. Both products were brand new last year and were developed alongside an award-winning, Michelin star chef. No wonder they were so tasty then!
