Do you always stick to the same cakes for birthdays? Why not mix it up this year and instead of your trusty chocolate cake, try a delicious blueberry gateau or an impressive piñata cake.

Here are a few of our best birthday bakes for you to choose from…

Piñata cake

Piñata cakes, or surprise inside cakes are having a real moment. You can apply the concept of the bursting middle to any sponge cake you already make at home. You just need to make sure that the cake has enough layers to create a big enough space in the middle. Our piñata cake is filled with dolly mixture, jelly babies, Smarties and M&Ms but you could opt for chocolates, fruit or any kind of sweet of choice.


Proper chocolate cake

If you’ve never found a chocolate cake recipe that works for you, then you need to try this one. A simple sponge is sandwiched together with a super chocolatey buttercream filling, then topped with a sticky and sweet chocolate (we use golden syrup…) which can then be decorated with flakes and buttons.



Perfect for the kids – this cool castle cake is easier to make than you might think. The sponge layer is made of a square and round Madeira cake, then topped with simple buttercream and ready to roll icing. We love the ice cream cone turrets.


Blueberry gateau

The grown-up sophisticated version of the piñata cake. This pretty-as-a-picture sponge cake is filled with fresh blueberries and topped with purple buttercream. You could also try this with any kind of small berry and match the colour of the buttercream...think raspberry and pink or blackberry and dark purple.


Classic Victoria sponge cake

If you’ve never baked a cake before, this is the most fool proof cake recipe there is. Butter, sugar, flour and eggs are mixed together and baked, then sandwiched with jam. Easy peasy and still an absolute masterpiece.


Gluten-free carrot cake

Everyone loves a proper carrot cake, and our version also contains plump and juicy sultanas and crunchy pecans. Plus, it’s gluten free, which is always a winner when you’re catering for a crowd.


Black forest gateau

Dark chocolate, cherries and cream are a match made in heaven. In this showstopping Black Forest gateau cake chocolate sponges are layered with cherry jam, whipped cream and cooked cherries, then topped with grated chocolate. Delicious. Just be warned; it's not the easiest thing to cut into...
