The best toppings to pimp up your cereal

You’d be forgiven for forgetting to make your morning cereal extra fabulous – after all – it’s already one of the most delicious and easy breakfasts out there!

But, with very little extra effort or time it is possible to pimp up your bowl of brekkie with bold flavours and important vitamins that are guaranteed to set you off on the right track.  Here’s some contemporary creations that the whole family will enjoy and that work well with any breakfast cereal, to get you started:

Maximise vitamin c and start the day right by adding a generous handful of thawed, frozen mixed summer fruits or forest fruits (or try smoothie mix summer fruits and banana). Drizzle with a little agave or runny honey and sprinkle with Asda Good and Balanced berry seed mix.

Juicy, zingy pomegranate seeds can give you some real ‘get up and go’ in the morning as they’re packed with vitamins and antioxidants. They are also high in fibre. Scatter a generous handful over your bowl of cereal with some sliced strawberries for extra red fruit benefits.

Limbo your way to work with this tropical treat. Spoon Asda Grower’s selection pre-packed tropical fruit salad over your bowl of cereal with a sprinkling of lightly toasted, desiccated coconut and some finely chopped dried dates or an Asda Good and Balanced Date and Walnut snack pack. Finish off with a dusting of ground cinnamon.

By now most of us know the five a day message but did you know that the best way to up your intake of vitamins and nutrients is by eating a rainbow of fruit and veg throughout the day? With that in mind why not add a selection of different colour fruits to your morning cereal such as red and green grapes, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries, kiwi fruit, red and green apples, bananas, pineapple or mango. Younger children will have great fun arranging a rainbow in their bowls!

All things green and beautiful. We're always told to eat more greens for good health and whilst adding kale to your morning cereal may be a tiny step too far, green fruits are a great choice. Add chopped green apples and/or pears, green grapes and chopped kiwi fruit with a dollop of natural yoghurt.

Cocoa contains lots of antioxidants not to mention masses of flavour. Sprinkle ½ tsp cocoa nibs over your cereal, such as Asda Choco squares or choco snaps, then top with fresh blueberries and a spoonful low-fat chocolate and orange flavour yoghurt or dark chocolate soya dessert.

You can’t beat a banana sliced up on your cereal to boost energy. How about swapping milk for banana and strawberry smoothie and a few dried banana chips for an extra banana boost? Delicious!

A selection of your fave protein-packed nuts, roughly chopped, will create a crunchy start to the day. If you have time, sprinkle with a warm spice like cinnamon or mixed spice and lightly toast the nuts in a non-stick fry pan then spoon over the cereal and drizzle with a little agave or runny honey.

Always handy to have in the cupboard on standby, dried fruits are a deliciously sweet yet healthy way to perk up your cereal. Try apricots, prunes, dates, figs, mango, raisins (golden and normal) and pineapple as a mixed combo or a single serving. Go mad and add a handful of goji berries to feel properly virtuous!

Add a generous scoop of Asda Good and Counted strawberry or chocolate Greek-style frozen yoghurt to your cereal with a handful of fresh berries and a drizzle of runny honey, agave or for a real treat…. chocolate or strawberry sauce.
