Smoke is king when it comes to barbecuing American style. There is no quick and easy way of creating that smoky, chargrilled and mouthwatering flavour without waiting very patiently for the meat to season and tenderise on the BBQ.
But thanks to Asda's new Southern States of America range, you can have a taste of the deep south on your plate at the click of an oven button.
Low and slow BBQ from the the land of smoke and glory
Asda have taken a road trip through the heart of the United States to learn the secrets of their smoking success.
And here’s the rub…you’ve got to start with the right seasoning, which is a seriously smoky blend of barbecue spices. Then you need patience, because for a real depth of flavour and authenticity they cook their meats low’n’ slow for up to 8 hours to create tender, succulent meaty dishes.
Asda have done all the hard work so you don’t have to slave away at the grill but simply take home a seriously smoky taste of America - no cleaning of the BBQ necessary!
Here's how to have a 'taste of the south' banquet
Oak Smoked Beef Rib
Our Oak Smoked Beef Ribs are so good that they've just been crowned 'Best BBQ Show-Off Product' at the Olive Supermarket Awards 2017! The awards, hosted by leading food magazine, Olive, were judged by an expert panel who did blind taste tests to pick their favourite products.
The beef rib is hot smoked over oak in a traditional smoke chamber, then slow cooked in a smoky marinade for up to eight hours. Mark Richmond, innovations development chef at Asda, explained, "Our Oak Smoked Beef Rib defines what BBQ is all about – because it’s cooked on the bone, it just falls apart on the fork."
Oak Smoked Beef Burnt Ends
Beef Burnt Ends are the ends of a brisket, which ‘catch’ most on the BBQ, and are super-tender and totally delicious. Oh, and because the barbecuing has already been done, it means you can have a taste of the southern states come rain or shine. Serve them up with barbecue pit beans and creamy coleslaw.
Spicy Chipotle Pulled Pork
Mark raves about the Spicy Chipotle Pulled Pork which is "inspired by heading even further south into Mexico." He says, "we’ve smoked a hot chilli to infuse the pork with a smoky, spicy flavour. For me, this makes the ideal burrito with avocado and salsa." We've served them here in soft brioche buns with crunchy slaw.
Bourbon chicken drumsticks
"Bourbon is a great pairing for BBQ food", says Mark, "because it's aged in barrels, so it's got a bit of the smokiness already." And it goes perfectly with these taste of the south chicken drumsticks.
Smoky BBQ Rack of Pork Ribs
Slow-cooked pork ribs with fall-apart meat, drenched in a smoky tomato, paprika, cayenne barbecue and molasses sauce - everyone will be fighting over these ribs. Just remember to have some napkins to hand...
Pull together some sensational sides
No BBQ would be complete without ketchup - but as this is an American BBQ, you need to try our sweet and salty maple bacon ketchup which goes perfectly with savoury BBQ meats. Sauerkraut, which is fermented cabbage, will add a nice zing to your barbecued meats. And finish off your plate with a portion of sweet potato chips served with chipotle mayonnaise.
This dazzling Mexican-style salad combines feta with avocado, tomato and red onion; all the best salady bits!
Hearts of romaine lettuce chargrilled may be simple, but my goodness do they taste good.
Corn on the cob
This Mexican baked corn with melted Parmesan and chives elevates a simple dish and makes it even more irresistible.
