3 Ways To Quickly Ripen Avocados

It's no secret that the world has gone slightly avocado mad lately. And with avocado's creamy texture and amazing versatility, it's no surprise why! Avocado makes a great sandwich topper, a surprisingly delicious pancake ingredient and a hearty salad filler. Not to mention avocado's role in everyone's favourite dip, guacamole! But while our love for this green fruit is easy to explain, finding a perfectly ripe avocado is much tricker. Cut an avocado open too early and you're left with rock hard flesh but wait too long and the fruit will be brown and mushy.

Enter these three genius tips for how to ripen an avocado quickly. Whether you have six days, two days or ten minutes, we've got the solution to your unripe avocado woes.

How to ripen an avocado in less than a week

Bought unripe avocados on Tuesday but want to make guacamole on Friday? No problem! Try this clever trick – place your unripe avocado in a brown paper bag, seal the bag and then wait. The bag traps the ethlyene gas that the avocado produces, helping the fruit ripen. Your avocado should be perfectly ripe in approximately 3-6 days.

To speed the ripening process up even further, use the same tactic as above but add an apple or a banana to the bag. The fruits emit more ethlyene gas, which further promotes ripening.

How to ripen an avocado in ten minutes

For times when you really can't wait to eat your avocado, here's a fast-acting hack. Wrap the fruit in aluminium foil and pop it in the oven for about ten minutes at 90 degrees. Transfer the avocado to the fridge and allow it to cool. That's it – a soft, ready-to-eat avocado is yours! But it's worth noting that by using this method, the taste of the avocado will be slightly altered.
