Our round-up of the best brews to quench your thirst this summer

For beer drinkers, it’s a terrific time. A recent explosion in craft ales and lagers from small, independent and traditional breweries means there’s more choice than ever before – and Asda is at the forefront of this growing trend.

'It’s a great time for customers who’ve never tried craft beers to sample them.’

‘The craft beer culture continues to grow and, with almost 50 different varieties on our shelves now, it’s a great time for customers who’ve never tried craft beers to sample them,’ says Hywel Evans, Ale and Craft Beer Buyer at Asda. ‘It’s clear that customers are trading up to more premium beers and are buying into this new beer movement. We have tried to reflect this in our stores by working with some great staple craft breweries from the UK and abroad, while also supporting smaller local breweries.

‘From American-style pale ales in cool cans to refreshing experimental brews, such as BrewDog’s grapefruit-infused IPA, the lines we’ve launched are all premium quality and will give customers in urban hotspots across England and Wales access to tasty craft beers that they may not usually have.’

So whether you’re stocking up on beers for a BBQ or sipping as you enjoy watching summer sport, here’s our pick of the best craft brews in town. The only trouble you’ll have will be choosing your favourite...

Stone Brewing Go-To IPA

From the uber-creative Stone Brewing empire, this very hoppy session IPA is bursthing with intense peach, melon and citrus aromas, and just enough malt flavour for balance. The finish is deliciously dry and bitter (4.7% ABV)

Try it with: Seagood, grilled salmon, spicy curries and jerk chicken.

Fourpure American Pale

One for California dreamers. This bold but simple West Coast-style ale has a whiff of malt and tangerine on the nose, backed up by waves of ripe fruit and floral flavours on the palate. It’s clean and light with a citrus finish. A beer to blow away the clouds on a summer’s day. (5% ABV)

Try it with: Zesty desserts like lemon tart or key lime pie.

Brewgooder Clean Water Lager

This premium craft lager is made all the more refreshing by the fact that 100% of Brewgooder’s profits go to fund clean-water projects around the world. The beer itself is a clear, pale-gold lager with a biscuity lemon nose and a pilsner-style finish plus a touch of fruity flourish. (4.5% ABV)

Try it with: Quiche, sausage rolls and Scotch eggs.

Harbour Antipodean |PA

Brewed using spring water from the hillside next to the brewery in Cornwall, this is a modern take on a British stalwart. This golden ale has a tropical fruit aroma, a sharp hit of lime and mango from the hops, biscuity malt and a dry, bitter finish. (5.5% ABV)

Try it with: Mild curries and Thai or Vietnamese dishes.

Victory Vital |PA

PK Cut Loose Pilsner

New World hops give a lemony-lime zing to this award-winning beer from the Powderkeg microbrewery in Devon. Elegant and full-flavoured, this German pilsner-style brew scooped Best Lager at the IWSC Beer Awards in 2016 and its bright citric fruitiness is a true treat to beat the heat. (4.7% ABV)

BrewDog Elvis Juice

Cool name. Cool brew. Infusing a beer with tart, grapefruit peel may not sound like a winning formula but it works. An American IPA with a caramel malt base and a wallop of citrus on top of hops. (6.5% ABV)

Hitachino Nest Beer White Ale

This award-winning Japanese brand has a cult following. In keeping with the tradition of Belgian white beer, it’s brewed with coriander, nutmeg and orange peel. Harpoon |PA

Harpoon’s flagship IPA caramel-citrus combo didn’t last long as just a summer seasonal ale; its popularity led to year-round availability. A classic IPA – one of the first brewed on the East Coast of America – it’s hoppy, floral and crisp with a solid malt structure and a clean, fresh finish. (5.9% ABV)

Try it with: Mexican –burritos, tacos and nachos.

BrewDog Punk |PA

Another top-notch beer by BrewDog. Balanced and full-flavoured, this beer gives a nod to classic IPAs. Hoppy, resinous and packed with fruits with a dry finish, it’s brewing bravado at its best. Its bitterness cuts through salt and fat. (5.6% ABV)
