Ingredients
  • 225g self-raising flour
  • 1 level tsp mixed spice
  • 115g butter, cut into cubes
  • 100g granulated sugar
  • 125g mixed dried fruit
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1-2 tbsp milk
  • Marzipan, to decorate
Method
  • Pre-heat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. Line 2 baking trays with baking paper. Sift the flour and mixed spice into a bowl.

  • Add the butter, then rub in with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and fruit.

  • Stir in the egg and 1 tbsp milk to make a stiff dough. You may need extra milk - add a teaspoon at a time.

  • Put in 10 piles on the trays and press lightly into bun shapes. Roll the marzipan to make thin strips. Put on top of the cakes to make crosses.

  • Bake for 15 minutes, then leave to cool on a wire rack.
