Revealed: Window cleaning tips for a streak-free shine

It’s no lie that getting a streak-free shine is a bit of an art! But fear not if you’ve been puzzling over the best way to get your windows looking like they’ve been tended to by a pro every day. We’ve got the ultimate window cleaning tips and tricks for gleaming, streak-free panes.

For the ultimate in streak-free shine, you need to finish up by buffing the windows with a wedge of newspaper

GET THE RIGHT TOOLS

Don’t let your tools be the culprit and create streaks! You’ll need a good chunky sponge (not the kind with a scouring side), a clean squeegee, a few clean rags, warm soapy water (washing up liquid is fine for this), a window cleaner spray and some newspaper to finish up.

PICK THE RIGHT WEATHER

Washing windows in bright sunshine might seem like the best plan, but cloudier days are actually far better. Direct sunlight will mean your soapy water and cleaning sprays dry too quickly leaving serious streaks.

MINIMISE THE SPREAD OF GRIME

Whether you’re washing the inside or outside of the windows, give the surrounding sills and frames a wipe down first. If they’re especially grubby use a dustpan and brush to sweep away any debris and give any serious grime a quick wipe, so that you don’t end up smearing over your clean windows later.

START WITH A SOAPY SPONGE

Depending on how dirty the windows are, start off by dunking your sponge in the warm soapy water (using too much soap in the water will lead to more stubborn streaks; less is more), ringing it out and giving the whole window a good wash. If you’re doing outside windows, this will be especially helpful, as might a little window scraper for any stubborn grime.

PERFECT YOUR SQUEEGEE TECHNIQUE

An essential part of any window cleaner’s kit, the effectiveness of your squeegee technique is the make or break for a streak-free clean. After giving the panes a soapy wash, remove the water by starting at the top of the window with your squeegee, and working your way down in a reverse-S pattern. Wipe the blade clean regularly to stop spreading the dirt around. To really boost the shine, follow up with a spray of window cleaner and repeat the squeegee action.

THE NEWSPAPER TRICK

For the ultimate in streak-free shine, you need to finish up by buffing the windows with a wedge of newspaper. According to experts, the light abrasion from the paper and ink will give you unrivalled sparkle! To do it, fold the paper over on itself to make a solid ‘pad’, and wipe all over the window in either vertical or horizontal motions (keep it consistent). Then stand back and admire.
