What to listen to when working out (or chilling) in the New Year

Whether you're thinking about hitting the gym, decluttering your home or resuming a rigorous work schedule, it can be hard to shift back into gear post Christmas.

If you want to tear yourself away from the TV screen but benefit from some motivating, relaxing or educational, have a nosey at the best and latest podcasts, radio shows and music releases...

1.the best Podcasts

Although podcasts have been around for well over a decade, this year they've seen a noticeable boom in popularity. It's no wonder, really – if you were one of many hooked on Love Island this Summer, you would have been at least a little interested to tune into the 'Morning After' podcast to get the goss. Spin-off podcasts are a great idea if you find yourself counting down the hours until you get your favouritee show airs. If you're after something a little more thrilling and chilling, 'Serial' was the podcast that captivated fans of the 'true crime' genre this year. And for when you're in the kitchen, a good foodie podcast provides a bit of relaxing background noise – think Violet (by Violet Bakery), or Honey & Co: The Food Talks. There really is something for everyone.

How to listen

Feel like easing into the day by listening to a good podcast enroute to work? Grab a pair of these MIXX JX1 Bluetooth wireless headphones to block out any annoying noise pollution on that commute. We love the pretty rose gold colourway... Find podcasts the simple way via your internet browser, using the Apple podcasts app (if you have an iPhone or iPad) or the Google podcasts app if you have an Android phone.

2. The best Music

Nothing gets you in the mood for a workout quite like music – play some upbeat tunes while getting ready for the gym, and make sure to save a punchy playlist for the treadmill. We reckon the top tunes you'll be streaming in the New Year will include a song or two from Arianne Grande's new album, as well as some Little Mix, Rita Ora and perhaps a few tracks from The Annual 2019 – Ministery of Sound.

How to listen

A pair of MIXX Streambuds are a great fit with runners. Super-comfy, they even have a call-handling function, should anyone dare to interrupt you mid-workout! Designed to stay securely in place, they offer wireless convenience with stereo sound, and can be paired with a phone, tablet or laptop via Bluetooth. Oh, and there are no cables to untangle. Late Christmas present, anyone..? Use music streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer or Soundcloud (best for indie music fans). If you're looking a completely free option, you're currently limited to Spotify's ad-supported service.

3. The best Entertainment

If you don't have a home speaker, well, we're not sure how you've been coping. Whether you're throwing a party, relaxing with a hot bath, practicing yoga or making dinner, there are so many occasions that call for background music. A speaker you can move from room is even better, and is more than sufficient if you live in a small home or flat.

How to listen

The AKAI A58077BG Bluetooth Portable Speaker is small, portable and super-cute - not to mention pocket-friendly. It features a buit-in battery for hours of play back, and is available in three colours – silver, black and (yes, that's right) rose gold. Happy listening, all.
