Whether you’re in search of inspiration for a gentle refresh or are after a total transformation, these styles, cuts and colours range from the super subtle shaggy lobs and bed hair to the supernatural like rose gold, purple, and even glow in the dark hair. From bright and bold hues to the new take on layers, here’s what social media has in store for your locks.
Prepare to go peroxide; the silvery white-blonde shades most recently sported by Michelle Williams, Rihanna and Jennifer Lawrence are set to go mainstream.
Ask for yours with a silvery finish to stay ahead of the curve in 2017.
Rose gold hair
You may have noticed the rose-gold hair trend hit Instagram last year, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. This next wave is warmer, softer (almost faded), and done with artful precision. We are seeing a softer and more washed-out rose gold pink.
The shaggy "Lob"
Not sure where to take your lob this year? The 'lob' (long bob) was the surprising hit haircut in 2016. This year, let those layers and fringe grow out to shoulder length, and let your fringe grow out long enough to be split down the middle. ‘The shag’ is back for 2017 with a new take on textured layers – think Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and ask your stylist to keep the layers long to avoid the cut feeling dated.
Tiger Eye hair
Reminiscent of the striped copper stone, tiger eye hair is the update to balayage we’ve been waiting for. A warm and natural sun-kissed balayage, Tiger Eye (so called because of the similarities between the blend of shades and the empowering bronze stone), offers a richer, deeper take on subtle multi-tonal hair. We’re talking deep, warm base colours that transition to nearly edible shades of caramel. Bronze tones can help to tie in the darker and lighter shades and play nicely against a warm skin tone.
Apparently not as hard as it looks (although we've yet to master this skill), the fishtail is taking over. So get practising!
Loved balayage and Tiger Eye hair but looking for something with a bit more colour? Well, we’ve got something new for you.
One for the brave and lovers of bold colour, purple balayage is flooding Pinterest as a follow-on from last year’s pastel dips and lilac rinses.
If you’ve been teetering on the edge of a rainbow dye job, this could be your gentle way in.
Natural "bed hair"
In excellent news for over-sleepers everywhere, 2017 is poised to be the year of natural-looking hair.
Two trends in one, expect to see less heat styling and more natural texture. From Instagram to Pinterest, undone looks are everywhere, with an emphasis on letting your hair dry naturally.
Glow-in-the-dark rainbow-coloured hair exists and has taken over our feeds – although this look will be a little harder to achieve.
The look is technically called "phoenix hair" and is created with rainbow hair dye that's designed to glow under a black light.
The man behind the trend is colourist Guy Tang, who uses Kenra Color Creative Neon Collection dye, which transforms the hair into a fluorescent rainbow shade.
For this particular look, Tang suggests doing back-to-back bleaching to lighten the hair color to be as blonde as possible before applying the neon dye.
