Three new denim trends to shake up your daytime wardrobe

When it comes to denim, we’ve all got our comfort zones. For some it’s a trusty pair of ankle grazing skinny jeans that slip under boots just as easily as they sit above a pair of trainers.

This season comes with a whole host of new shapes and styles that make it the most exciting time to go jeans shopping in years

For others, it’s a pair of wear-anywhere straight legs that’ll see us straight from the school run through to the weekend.

But while we’ve all got our fall-back denim, what about the trends?

Naturally, denim’s never out of style, but this season comes with a whole host of new shapes and styles that make it the most exciting time to go jeans shopping in years.

If that wasn’t enough to tempt you, George at Asda is celebrating the brilliant new denim collection with a generous 20% off all jeans from 8 - 15 September, too!

So to help you navigate the new looks, here’s a breakdown of the three biggest denim trends for autumn, with a few handy styling tips.

Ready for a wardrobe refresh?

Mom Jeans

The trend: Don’t be put off by the ambiguous name; ‘mom jeans’ simply take their moniker from the fact that the shape and style closely resemble popular cuts of the 80s and early 90s. Yep, they’re a slightly tweaked blast from the past that’ll suit everyone from teens and twenty-somethings, to those of us pushing fifty and beyond. Cutting a compromise between high-waisted and low-rise styles, the waistband sits closer to your natural waist, while the legs are tapered rather than super skinny or baggy.

How to wear it: Look for distressed finishes to keep the look feeling current - a little fraying here and there, a slashed knee, a faded wash - and team with your favourite luxe-basics. Roll the ankles a little and rock with a tucked-in white t-shirt for style instant points.

Denim Dungarees

The trend: Forget everything you thought you knew about dungarees; they’re not just for kids and painter/decorators. Here to take the place of your pull-on-and-go summer playsuits, a pair of well-fitting denim dungarees are the perfect smart/casual wardrobe staple that'll come to the rescue of all 'what to wear' dilemmas. Once you've found your perfect pair, you’ll wonder what you ever did without them.

How to wear it: Look for fitted cuts to avoid drowning your frame, and wear them over a relaxed t-shirt for casual style. Layer with a smart roll neck and heels when winter kicks in for easy elegance with a fashionable twist.

Girlfriend Jeans

The trend: Again, don’t let the name fool you; these jeans suit every body shape, and you don’t need to be anyone’s girlfriend to rock them! A slimmer fitting version of the baggy boyfriend jean trend that took hold a few years back, the girlfriend jean sits on the hips and comes in a cut that’s not skinny, but far from baggy either. If you find that baggy jeans do nothing to flatter your figure, these are your answer to comfort and style rolled into one.

How to wear it: Great for casual wear, team these with a t-shirt and cosy knit to really nail weekend cool, or contrast the loose fit and on-trend distressed finish with a super feminine blouse to smarten things up.
