A fashion guide to layering: What to wear when the seasons blur into one

As the seasons change and the temperatures begin to drop (or get doused by a rainy thunder cloud), it can be tempting to pack up your lighter clothes and bid them a tearful farewell.

A wardrobe that you can wear all year round does sound too good to be true, but with these layering tips, you can make it a stylish reality

Unless, of course, you know how to layer in style.

A huge trend currently sweeping the fashion crowd, artful layering is perfect if you’re not quite ready to say goodbye to slip dresses and sleeveless numbers.

It’ll also to help to keep your wardrobe feeling more diverse, and means you don’t have to splash cash on as many new season items, too. Yes, a wardrobe that you can wear all year round does sound too good to be true, but with these layering tips and tricks, you can make it a stylish reality.

Because although the weather outside may be frightful, temperatures indoors are warm and cosy. Knowing how to layer is the perfect style solution to fluctuating temperatures and changing seasons.

Layer strappy dresses over a classic white t-shirt

The easiest way to give last season's dresses staying power, is to slip a slim fitting white t-shirt or Breton stripe top underneath. Instant new outfit, with extra style points.

Team strappy tops with sleeves

The same applies to strappy camisoles. Pop them over a blouse or t-shirt for a modern take on autumnal layering.

Opt for fashion-forward accessories

A stylish hat and matching gloves set is the perfect way to stay cosy when temperatures drop but just because it's dreary outside, doesn't mean you can't have some fun by mixing-and-matching hats, scarves and gloves to create a fashion-forward look.

Jumpers and dresses

Add slouchy knits over dresses for a warmer way to keep wearing your favourite frocks, and easy smart-casual dressing.

Invest in a turtle neck

Stay warm in style with a cosy turtle neck. For a fashionable not frumpy look, layer underneath slip dresses, winter knits, or eye-catching ponchos, and team with skinny jeans or fit-and-flare skirts. Could this be the most versatile piece of clothing in your wardobe?

Cosy up in long sleeve shirts

Team skirts or dresses with a denim or plaid shirt, to stay warm as the weather changes. Who’s to know you didn’t plan to wear it this way all along?

Peek-a-boo socks

Teaming your favourite warmer weather dress with tights is a brilliant way to extend your frock's wearibility, but to take your winter style to the next level, add some thick socks to go over your tights and just peek out over your winter boots. Stay extra toasty with knitted bright socks or make a statement in chic frills
