OK, so we can’t all spend our summers catching rays and people-watching on Copacabana beach, but that doesn’t mean we can’t allow a little bit of Brazilian style into our wardrobes. It’s easier than you think to embrace the Rio mania and give your wardrobe a tropical injection.
Follow our guide to adapating the Rio trends to suit your style and it’ll only be a matter of time before you’re mistaken for Gisele, Brazil’s very own supermodel…
Don't be afraid of clashing prints
When it comes to the carnival capital of the world, there’s no such thing as less is more. It’s all about colour and patterns – no matter how much you might think they clash. But if the mere idea of wild colour clashes makes you feel uncomfortable you don’t have to go too crazy – how about picking one bold, patterned piece and then accessorising with different colours? You’ll look both cool and confident. After all, who wants to blend in?
Take the plunge with tropical swimwear
Even if you’re going no further than your local lido this summer, you’ll feel hot hot hot in tropical-themed swimwear. The supermodel-esque women of Rio might leave little to the imagination with their high-cut bikinis and plunging necklines, but you can flirt with the trend in more subtle and flattering ways too, by pairing tankinis and high-waisted bikini bottoms with more risqué pieces if you dare.
Show off your tan with neon basics
Whether you got your tan from a bottle or from your very own tropical getaway (lucky you), you’ll want to show it off. A simple dress or top in a bright neon shade will instantly make you glow. And while they make great beach cover-ups after a long day in the sun, don’t rule out wearing them closer to home either by teaming them with denim. You’ll stand out in the crowd in the best possible way.
Get a little bit fruity
Pineapples are having a fashion moment – they’re all over the high street on both clothes and home furnishings. You could go the whole hog with a dress emblazoned with the most tropical of fruits, or show your appreciation in a more subtle way.

Go Brazilian without getting a Brazilian
Not all Rio style has to be revealing. You can be tropical but weather-appropriate too by investing in practical but pretty printed trousers. Even on a rainy day, you’ll feel like doing a carnival shimmy (head-dress optional!).
